 Research Idea Two

How to make fake blood and fake bruises

Fake Blood:

what i want to achieve when it comes to creating this fake blood is a form that is not identical of real blood but more thin and liquidy substance that with fit in the actor mouth without struggle and have it be not disgusting do the actor can hold in in their mouth for a while and multiple time without it taking away from their acting. there is the common use of ketchup in replacement of blood but it is not the colour or texture that i would want to achieve even when its mixed with water. Another reasons i want the fake blood this way is so that it is picked up on camera and adds to a more dramatic effect as it will spray more and spread and travel further.

How to do this:

for a edible realistic fake blood look i looked for a recipe for it and found many articles focus on halloween and i found a couple that i believe offer good results for what i want and i have listed them below instead of writing them as they contain more detail that is necessary to know.

I will try out and practice each one to know which fits my idea best so that i can achieve the best results.

Fake Bruises:

Fake Bruises can is much easier to achieve than the blood as it can be done with makeup with some techniques. the bruises need to look as realistic as possible as there is multiple close ups and if the make up is not good then it will come across slightly tacky. all of the resources needed for these bruises are everyday make up product that can be easily found so all that is needed is the right method. This is done by the layering of different tone of dark reds/purples/yellows to create the right shade of a bruise that has aged. when it comes to applying this routine to our opening i will put on a couple bruises 4-5 maybe 2 on his face and others on his arms so that you can get the sense that he has been there a while as dark bruises do not just form immediately. As i just noted they do not just form dark there is a part in our opening when a man is getting punch and followed with a close up of his face, but as he was only just punched i would as a more rosey and pink areas around his face. To create even more of a beat up face i might include the use of lip pumper and some blue/purple/pink make up on the lip to create the look of a swollen or infected lip.
here is a useful source for creating this makeup:

Research Idea One

How to shoot content so it looks like security camera content

the image of the security camera really depends on the image that wants to be communicated

- the saturated image provides a more paranormal feel and help dramatise actions as it accentuates and brightens the image while still keeping to the classic black and white mode with a bluey hue. what this says about the camera

-the black and white is easily recognisable and doesn't take away from the action itself but it still add tension through slight mystery as there is indistuguashable colour and is unfamiliar to what we see everyday .

-but there is also the slightly more modern 'Ring' type security cameras which often clear picture and full colour - this offers a more realistic everday camera and if displayed right could offer a thriller aspect

Pelco

Pelco is essentially a surveillance company provider for most of the U.S services so you might have seen their cctv cameras or security camera in 'hollywood' type media as it is widely familiar to the area. Pelco, while it is widely used in the U.s is also known for being the use of surveillance for places like Buckingham Palace, the Statue of Liberty and China's Presidential Palace. Pelco obviously doesn't just offer the style of camera you are seeing now which is a fixed and best used for outdoors but also the more refined 'indoor' camera which is their line of Dome cameras as this offers a clearer picture and also usually provide a 360 view. the other more modern option that is also very recognisable is their wedge/Corner camera which is as you would expect in the conner of rooms usually picking up footage from a specific area while still having high quality image. this company is only a good example of a source for surveillance that is widely used and therefore would be useful to use in media to be recognised. When applying this to our film opening i would focus more on the Wedge camera type as we online have to focus on the action we want to display and we just need to focus on the colouring/lighting.

How To Achieve:

While it is obvious that we will not be using real security image i wanted to explore what sources and types there were for a more genuine manufactured style we will create this. As we are creating a thriller i felt that going for a black and white camera image that is clearly age would have more of an impact and fit more classically also the Sarix Corner Camera 3(one of Pelco's cameras) offers this feature. Another choice i would make when editing this camera footage to fit more with thee corner camera style would be to cut the screen size down so there is a change from normal camera to surveillance, all that would be done is that the sides would be a little cropped but overall this would defiantly add a more real looking aspect to the content. Also the black and white look could be achieved by adding a filter during editing and just an enhancing increasing exposure of the video a little to create that artificial look the camera offers.

Mood Board

I created a mood board to compose my ideas for the film as a visual aid with the key themes and aspect i image for our film opening.
our genre is definitely thriller/action as it follows a man trapped in his own illusion of someone trying to ‘kidnap’ and kill him when the truth is that he is so mentally unstable he is the one doing it to himself.

i have reflected this vibe by using the common themes like dark hallways and blood on the floor which are still relevant and a shear very much to the thriller expectation, also there are photo of the his mental state which are very eerie adding to the thriller look.

the use of neon is a key theme in ours as we will be using it very much and even as it is on the purge mask so it’s was important that i used the correct green blue lighting we wanted as it makes the whole board reflect that same look we want from the opening

another theme that is very important would be the mask villain as it we are constantly showing this mystery killer who has a mask so i found it impotent to include this by using the mask that they’d wear and a hooded figure cut also i wanted to show what their hands would look like as that is the only real part of the person we’d see

i also wanted to include the theme of being watch with is very important in our opening as that is what is constantly on the man’s mind. i included this by putting a security camera specifically in the dark to keep the vibe i was looking for and also by adding photos of writing on walls to show that he is insane and that the real watcher is himself. i also think the writing on the wall is a good photo as we could write things that show him being paranoids about being watched

i do feel like i have displayed the visual presentation of our opening successfully as i have included parts of the characters mental and physical state while including the situation and their surroundings.

Connecting with Production Group

Today I was assigned my group for our coursework and to make

sure we were all in contact and organised for the work to come

we all made a WhatsApp group and shared our schedules

Concept Ideas Feedback

Below is the feedback I received about my opening film ideas from the class:

When presenting my idea I got very helpful feedback on how I can develop and move forward with my ideas and I will note down what exactly that feedback was and what I will be doing to enhance my ideas:

  • The feedback I got for Idea 2 - the Horror plot was that the setting/time I had chosen was essentially too generic and that it could be placed in the future for a unique and unusual setting. What I would do to move forward with this feedback would be to, as it was mentioned, place the story in the far future with the blind man be a rich old man as well and the women coming and attacking him be a spy like figure(trained assassin getting her revenge) this could be done is very interesting way with unusual lighting/makeup/setting, all in all it would open up a lot of room for creativity. I would change parts of the plot so it fits the setting better and the story provides a more interesting point of view. One part of the feedback was that the use of the man being partially blind was a good method as you wouldn’t be able to see the threat so I would keep this part.

  • The feedback I got for Idea 3 - the drama/romance was that the connotation of colour was useful and a good idea but that I should consider the colour more as if I was to present a more dangerous story I would use red. Another note I got was that the connotation of what was going on in the car might not be appropriate so a way I would change this is by having no cuts when it shows them smoking so that there is no confusion when it comes to what happened in the car or for another idea to get around this I would put another person is the car between the two people that just gets ignored. While the connotation of colour is important I wouldn’t want to change the lighting to red unless I changed the plot which was another note as it was said that it would be interesting to put a horror turn on it and show the boy seeing their relationship as beautiful and romantic but in reality it is obsessive and that is the truth that is slowly revealed, this is an interesting plot that I would definitely want to explore but I am also torn with the original idea as they are such different plot and I need to flesh both out a bit more for sure.

Film Opening Concepts

I have made a list of 4 ideas for a possible film opening during break to present to my class. These idea are could be the basis of my film opening if chosen.

 Idea 1 -

Genre: drama/romance

What happens in the opening:

  •  an older woman is told some bad news “I’m sorry to inform you….has passed”.

  • A flashback would then show the two women meeting through mutual friend and the love interest (the one that died) asking for her number after/something like that

  • It would then show/follow the main character reacting and then it would cut to the title when it is a front tracking shot of her.

(scroll down a little for a more detailed layout)

Narrative: the story line would follow this older woman going through her memories of her history with this woman that she has just lost and how it is affecting her now.

extra:

At the beginning the older woman is told bad news “I’m sorry to inform you….has passed” then it goes to a flashback of the woman meeting up accidentally  with her friend and her friend's friend is there(this person we later learn is the one that passed away). They all get food at a pub or resort t then it cut to the women leaving out the door of the pub and the friends friends asking for her number or sorting like that and then they talk(we don’t hear it) and the women turns around noticeably happy and then it cuts to title

Idea 2 -

Genre: Horror/mystery

What happens in the opening:

  • The man wakes up (blurry vision POV) then realising that his glasses are not on his bedside table gets out of bed, he can have a very organised bedside table and have a glasses stand

  • Once out of bed we (the audience) see a blurry figure of a person in an over shoulder shot of the main character but  they move out of the frame/the doorway quickly

  • then it cuts back to the man and we see realisation hit his face

  • then it is a close up shot of his hand reaching for a baseball bat that was leant on the bed and take hold of it the shot

  • then cuts back to the mans face top body and the camera zooms back to that we can see an open window and curtain blowing in the background, with him holding the baseball and looking determined

Narrative: the story would follow the man but as the film goes on it is revealed that the person/women trying to kill him as revenge as she found out he himself is a serial killer

Also sound would be very important as for most of the time we are in the man's POV and that is really what he is relying on

Idea 3

Genre: drama/romance

What happens in the opening:

  • opens on a profile shot from inside a car of the front and back seat, they are listening to music and there is a person in the front of the car and there's a girl is the back, she hears ‘her song’ and she is just vining with it and the lighting is fades in slightly saturated purple/pink/blue lighting and the car will be haze because someone is smoking

  • then it cuts to the profile of the other side where there is a person looking at her with adoration/ they are mesmerised and it hold on him for a bit

  • It cuts back to her and she turns to look at the camera slightly and smiles then there is a bright light coming from the front of the car and the screen cuts to black at the same time that the sound effect of a car crash happens

  • Then the title would appear with possibly a voice over of the person we saw before mesmerised by the girl saying like “shit” or something along those lines

Narrative:

The rest of the story would follow the two people focused on meeting and their individual life and how they fit together up to the point of the car crash.

Idea 4

Genre: drama

What happens in the opening:

  • Opens on a family in a car listening to an audiobook all in a slightly disorganised seating position

  • Then it changes to a tracking shot of the family of 5 walking in a line all dress in black but still slightly eccentric outfits, a campers tune i the back

  • They then pull up to a church decorated with colourful balloons and other birthday decorations.

  • They turn in and the man in the font of the line come to a large photo of a women with the border writing “in loving memory of” then he says something like ‘hey mom’ while holding the big photo then they keep walking and go into the church

  • then there is no soundtrack just ambient sound and they all walk out the next minute except for the father, they're all noticeably older and look very normal compared to their previous outfits

  • They all seem out of touch as they are distancing themselves from each other noticeably

  • Then the mother start to walk out through the entrance of the church and they all follow and as they leave it is a tracking shot and then we stay at a certain moment where the dads photo is now being placed where his moms photo was before, and the campers tune starts playing again and it cuts to a bright title

Narrative:

The women dealing with loss and growing in their individual lives which come back to their roots after their dad dies, with occasional fashbacks to their childhood.

Extra:

3/4 women dealing with growing, changing and grieving - Drama, Loss, Growing, Femininity

Stanly Gucci audiobook playing -  a family of 4 all dressed in black in a car all sitting sin a slightly weird portion

“There it is, turn in here”

Tracking shot from the side of The family walking in Line on the sidewalk with a campers whistle in the back - non diegetic soundtrack

The dad is holding his hat/a cat/ a single flower(rose or something) and a mini keyboard

It tracks to the next section of the mom and The youngest is behind the mom holding a gift “ mom what do I do with it/can you hold it”

The mom taps her two times

“Just hold it/no babe”

It is once again the side tracking and the entrance of the church comes into view with a photo of a women smiling really big and confetti images/stickers around the border with balloons tired to it, the turn and enter and as they do so the camera turn to be tracking in front of the last two girls at the end of the line one is holding a huge bag of confetti and swimming it around

“This is fucking weird right”

Sighs ”yep” they are used to stuff like this

They enter the church

They all exit the church in a line but they are visibly older and all dressed in black- time has passed

as they exit they disperse in different directions so they are all standing a good distance, the dad is not with them the mom has a tissue\9 he’s dead) they are all very awkward so we get the sense that they are no longer close or in touch, the dad keep them together and it it just the ambient sound to show his presence lost. The mom leaves first to move closer to what we then see has changed to be a photo of the dad and we see her touch it,

-  we then see in the background the other girls moving together and pass they do so they once again from a one and the camera turns to a still shot from the back / a tracking shot from the other side with the campers whistle playing again as they all get into the same car/ go off into their own cars then the title comes

Or

- we stay of the photo of the dad and it cuts to title with a happy campers tuen coming back in

Producer - Spike lee

  Spike lee

Spike Lee was born and raised in Atlanta Georgia and introduced the world of film very early on as he would go on to have an incredibly influential presence in the film industry, Spike Lee work changed the film industry for the better and continues to do so. Spike Lee’s work is made with no doubt to display and “make films for a diverse audience” specifically featuring them in the African American community and story lines featuring race relations. Lee’s influence can not be disputed so it just comes down to how his methods were so effective in communicating exactly what he wanted and one of these would be the iconic and unique Dolly move that he is known for and he will always try to make his Camera Operator do as it makes the character look as they are floating. His first film he produced would be Joe's Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads which blew up a little and as his career went on he gained even more producer credit for movies such as Malcolm X, BlacKkKlansman, She's Gotta Have It, Do the Right Thing all which really pushed him up in the film industry quickly. When it comes to being in control of the whole set up Lee has tips that he himself would always follow too, the first being too not be afraid of unique and changing of camera angles(just don't shy away), create a detailed storyboard and schedule, be flexible when it comes to location and schedule, and hold respect everyone and everything that you are working with. With that advise you will be able to create and calm and stable environment so you can get exactly what you want from everyone you are working with.

Film editor - Jennifer Lame

 Jennifer Lame

Jennifer Lame has become known as a Film editor very quickly as she has worked on many iconic films such as Francis Ha, Hereditary, Tenet and Marriage Story all which have been awarded massive praise and won her awards as well. So how does Lame do this?, what are her techniques that carry such a high success rate in her films? The answer comes down purely to her style of editing and this being her technique of cutting scenes most in the middle which creates the sense of the movie moving constantly and carrying over without the audience, Lame claims that she does this whenever she can. Most of her technique comes from trying out and experimenting with the director though. an interesting point is how she went about editing Hereditary as she claims “I don’t want to do a horror movie. I don’t like horror movies" and that she wouldn’t do it but the director but instead she offered that she would do the editing to follow the family and their relationships and this would pay off as we get more content and reflection in some of the relationships , it was an unexpected but effective way of editing horror.

Camera Operator - Marcell Rév

 Marcell Rév

Marcell Rév is a widely respected camera operator for having been the cinematographer behind movies like Malcolm and Marie, White & Gold, Assassin's nation and tv show Euphoria. What Marvell has achieved through his individual camera work is a style that embodies the vibe around the movie; he has been said to ‘make the characters breathe’. How he does this varies on each piece he is put on but the base foundations never change this being, the high use of colour combinations and ‘emotional realism’ - a way of showing the character's overall emotions is a very exaggerated visual way. The use of colour is done through their colour temperatures, contrasting lighting with a colour palette and this is used to increase the emotional response and extremes so that the vibe is communicated in every possible way. This style tied into his belief of emotional realism as with these dramatic styles of lighting and colour are still kept naturalistic and very relatable with the wonderland atmosphere around it. A very good example and very known part of his work was Euphoria which is highly expressive and all his styles are extremely noticeable and was in fact instructed by the director to keep one lens the entire shoot, he shot the entire season one on an Alexa 65 to fit the youthful characters and their situations and fit with the modern point of view director Sam Levinson was trying to achieve, his favourite and most common form of film is the 35mm and will try to fit it in whenever he can.

DOP - Sayombhu Mukdeeprom

 Sayombhu Mukdeeprom

The Thai DOP Sayombhu Mukdeeprom best known for his work of Call Me By Your Name, Suspiria and Happy Birthday has worked very loyally and often with both Apichatpong Weerasethakul “Joe” and Luca Guadugnino and applying their themes while thoughrilly keeping his style in it root and infused in every form, this style being the romance and beauty in naturalism. Mukdeeprom first started making films with Joe with their first film ‘mysterious object at noon’ and when filming with joe his realist style carries through and their vision is the same in that hence why they went on to make so many beautiful movies together that were based in a fantasy but familiar like world, also when filming with Weerasethakul he would often use 16mm film. When filming with Luca Guadugnino he likes to use the 35mm and mostly shot with one lens when filming ‘CMBYN’ he also, and this counts for all his films not just call me by your name, tries to use natural light apart from ver very few lights correctly placed to carry the realist environment that always surrounds his work. Mukdeeprom’s philosophy is very important when applied to his work as he says “My principle is that I cooperate with people, I let things happen, I go by the environment” which is desmonstained as as he work he mixes and response to the environment they are using once again adding to the realism while also staying in harmony with your surroundings. When framing his work in often pus the audience in the position of the observer, that is what Mukdeeprom is trying to achieve when in comes to the audience's point of view, when he is filming he also always likes to use the arri system for the camera and for the lens it comes down to Cooke and Zeiss. Mukdeeprom  has experienced both film and digital and he found that he prefers film as digital doesn't resonate with him, it is purely personal preference.

Divergent Opening

 Divergent

The opening scene of Divergent covers so much information that it is extremely important for the whole film, this is as it is an introduction to the main character Tris’ society starting with what's outside it. The film is introduced with a non diegetic soundtrack with a dystopian theme with the title sequence already setting up what genre of film this will be: action. The first scene while accompanied by the soundtrack opens with a wide shot panning across a full green field with a beautiful sunny day setting a peaceful tone and then as the camera keeps panning left an abandoned ship is revealed destroying the peaceful image created in our minds once before and as the camera keeps on panning the audience are now expecting something else to be revealed and as expected a huge fence like structure appears supporting the dystopian theme that this follows. Beyond this fence a huge decomposing city appears, one that we can recognise, something that is familiar suggesting a factor of mystery on what has happened and when this is set. All of these things are answered when a society is shown living in the city and a new type of beat of non diegetic soundtrack is introduced, this one is more up beat and creates a sense of relief in the audience as they feel secure. Another new sound that is introduced at the same time as the change of soundtrack would be the unintelligible, overlapping peoples diegetic dialogue which once again create a sense of security as it it something we know and we are familiar with, it also accentuates the amount of people we think are living at this city. While most seems normal in this society we are then introduced to the outfits of the people the people that live as in the chaos of the crowds of people walking there are groups walking together and usually all wearing the colour in said groups for what reason, we are unaware but this shows that even among the chaos there is structure.

Another key moment from this opening would be when this new setting is described to us by a voice over which clears up essentially any question you would have had. Starting with the time, it is made clear to us that this is most likely earth in the future as there is a referenced ‘the war’ which would explain the decomposing of buildings and ships. As this is a film adaption it already has a fan base and these facts such as what factions were would be explained before the actual story start and so that is what this is doing, setting the scene. The use of voice over is successful as it has the possible hint of the main character and what they believe as when she is describing the factions she has a quite judgemental or impressed tone when saying ‘they know everything’ and moments like this create a connection to the audience before the character has even been introduced, a voice over that is personal and at the beginning of a film like this sets a unique and private tone. This use of voice over also comes in handy at the end of the opening scene when the camera is having a wide shot of the city and she say ‘except for me’, while tone was a good place to learn about our main character she is now not only a narrator but is giving personal information and this as it is at the end is clear to the audience is going to be the start of her journey.

While these all are good examples of story building, not many themes of action have been noted as this segment comes in when Tris is describing the factions and the traits of said factions. This starts with the reference of erudite ‘the smart ones’ which opens with a close up of a blue eye as an image to support the complex and scientific nature that follows them and as the next scene to present this faction is one of a pristine science lab suggesting a hierarchy in the system another part of this faction that has the connotation of power is their formal wear in science jackets or suits and appearing very put together. The next faction mentioned is amity which is shown in a green farm rocking peacefully, there is no particular connotation of status as they are a strong middle ground, but their earthy nature is supported by the neutral tone of their clothes and as this faction are connected to nature there is a shot which feature a large tree being in the centre of their screen implying that the earth in the centre of their group. The next faction mentioned is the faction of honesty which is portrayed by the simplistic nature of what they are wearing as it is just plain black and white while still being formal, the setting of the room presented is a courthouse suggesting that they hold the most power in this system, at the welcoming of this scene there

is also the diegetic sound and image of a gavel being hit as if a wakeup call to the truth which could something to occur the main character later. The next faction is shown to be peaked in the character interest is dauntless which are introduced with the diegetic sound of the groups laughter and shouting accompanied by a low angle tracking shot of them running together suggesting that their lives are fast and constant while they still hold power, our character is then seen running with them and we spot her as they are all dressed in black and hints of red suggesting their danger and mystery while she is dressed in a grey colour. The reason she is dressed in grey is as the main character is in the faction abnegation which is a place for giving which is supported by the signifier shot of a hand holding another followed by the camera panning right around the faction helping those in need, their grey colour suggest that they are not living for themselves (no self identity) but living to help others. And this system is fully completed by the faction less who are at the bottom of the system, this serene and balanced society inside the city is not what it appears as it is made clear that you can be stripped of faction and left on the street, you need to fit in to survive. I think the main audience from presenting the characters like this is women, specifically teen girls as what Tris is saying can resonate and is not too complex to understand. Like i said before it was a book before a movie so it already have a audience that have expectations but as an action film it present the build up for a revolution type storyline.

Interstellar Opening

 Interstellar

Interstellar opens in silence while tracking back to a level of a bookcase that looks aged while this shot is happening the title appears. The fact that this moment is in silence shows a slight significance as there is no distraction from what is being shown suggesting that what is being shown could be a hint to the plot of the film or to a key moment. Another accompanying factor in this shot that leads me to believe requires a form of focus is the dust like particles that are falling down slowly right by the bookcase as it is unusual for anything to be falling like this unless you are outside. Right before the screen fades to black there is a little toy spaceship that is shown at the edge of the bookshelf and as we know that this is a film mostly featured in space it confirms that there was possibly another hint to the context of the film hidden in the first 10 seconds. This would follow the common themes in a sci-fi film as most of the time nothing is really answered or revealed until the very end and lots of filmmakers in this genre like to leave hints from the beginning meaning that you only notice it the second time round. From darkness there is then the diegetic sound of a woman speaking as voice over on the black screen then leading to a sound bridge from the black screen to the older women talking. What is interesting about the setting and structure of the shot of this moment is that it feels very much like a documentary or interview style as it is a slight close up and the women is not looking at the screen but at someone off screen that is probably interviewing, also the lighting is focus fully on her as the space background around her in very low lighting but just behind her face is what we can recognise as a bookshelf which can be linked to the title sequence imply books or that bookshelf will be significant in this film. The woman then says her father was a farmer ‘like everybody else back then’ this continues into a sound bridge and voice over, over the shot of a corn field. What this sound and editing technique implies to the audience is that her speaking in past tense means that this film will be set in the future for us but past for that woman and so since we are going back in time this changes the transition into a flashback. None of the shots so far have not given any clue about the film and so the shot of the corn field becomes more than just a cornfield. It is to our understanding that this is probably the farm she was just talking about and the word ‘but that's not how he started’ being the last words suggest this film will be about how he got there. We now have gained so much of the plot without even realising that this will probably draw ina loyal fanbase that will watch dit again again as that is what it was made for, it may appear to complex but i don't believe it is necessary to catch all the little details to understand where this film will go.

The second part of the opening that i would recognise as a key moment as all the shots have meaning would be the scene leading on from where i left, in this moment it is a very fast cut to the side of a plane with the diegetic sound of the wind beating against the plane, then it cuts to inside the plane when you can hear the diegetic sound of the plane alarm and also the sound of a murmuring masculine this is occurring with the accompany of a shaky camera implying instability with the plane as the man seems stressed and their are clearing things not working properly in the plane. It is then focused on another sequence of the plane that we now know is crashing as we can hear the diegetic sound of the unsteady plane in the air which the air hitting hit hard and the sound of the plane alarm getting louder and faster with the man's diegetic shouting. All of these things plus the instability and the short time duration of each shot create a high intensity around the very start of the film. there is a noticeable change between the first. There is also a moment in this chaotic scene where we see the pilot's face. We have distinguished as a man from his voice but he is weaning a helmet in the shakey close up shots so all we can see are his eyes but we still can recognise his stress. This sequence of shots ends by a back view of the pilot hitting his head on his seat and we know that this is hard and there is the sound effect of that support a hard hit to the head also, there is then a cut to the man waking up and it is once again the sound of silence as it is the dramatic change it accentuates the sound of the hit and makes it sound worse. This hit and change into waking up combined with him seeming stressed and sweaty when he wakes up suggests the sequence we just saw was a nightmare and his diegetic heavy breathing shows this stress again. Also the change of light makes brings out the differences in both scenes and the different atmosphere in both as in the plane shot they is a high intensity and almost blinding light around the plane to make the scene more chaotic and overwhelming (sensory overload) while the waking up scene is in full darkness apart from the very low lighting to show some feature of his face and the sweat on him too, just enough to portray how he is feeling. Also there is an introduction to a young girl also low light that we gain the information is his daughter, she mentions a grandpa and a ghost both which could be significant informations as it is introduced at the start with the introduction of character, also it gives the indication that the main character(the man) is not a believe in the paranormal while the girl is, the references of a ghost im a sci-fi movie is definitely significant and it could be the case when one of them is proved wrong. This scene showed he is a family man and is possibly raising his daughter with his dad as there is no partner sleeping next to him.

The last part of this opening scene does not drop the ball on giving impactful information as the dystopian/suspenseful non-diegetic soundtrack starts to play again and increases intensity and volume coming to a slight pause when the character reaches his window. With the scene being mainly lit on low intensity with cold colours and just enough light to see few features on the man's face the widow flushes the shot with a lightness that is still cold giving a sense that we are in a cold climate but also with the view of a field and mountains. With both the intense music coming to a pause and a setting being given so the audiences are not fully in the dark it creates a sense of security that the character might be feeling as he just woke up from a nightmare where he ‘died’. The camera tracks the character from behind as he has regained the power in this scene but we are still unsure of what he is feeling hence the unseen face, it also creates a contrast of the light from the window and the darkness of his figure drawing all of our attention to the view but also hinting that we know very little about this character and that he is could possibly be a very moral wrong character or be foreshadowing for a bad situation he will not have control over as he is in the dark. The tracking shot then changes into a handheld zoom into the field to convey the setting once again and possibly imply importance of this setting (specifically to the character or to the movie in general). The feeling our character has for this setting is still unknown but with the next shot of a close up of his profile from the side and half lit by the window on the right of the shot and with the back of his head still engrossed by darkness, once again only highflying the his face very lightly but enough for the audience to view as disbelief or a serine state as his stares out onto the field. Another thing that is interesting about this shot is that his face is the only thing really in focus and that the camera is moving quite slowly but noticeably clearly making it handheld. The next shots dip highly into the editing technique of non- diegetic VO(voice over) as the old women we were introduced to before starts to talk about farming and as her voice over is over the shots of the side profile of the man and the field he is staring at suggesting that there is a connection that the two are connected and are possibly family that were as she noted “farmers”. As the women is talking about it from what we assume is the future in a documentary style setup and setting as i previously mentioned, the shots and filming of the man and his setting are enhanced with a docudrama type feel which also suggesting that what is going to happen to this man and his family is going to be a major event that will be renowned enough for a documentary to be made of the situation. This possible cause of this major event is then revealed to be ‘the blight’ and/or ‘the dust’ as the woman mentions the blight killed the wheat in a VO over a shot of the field moving in the wind. While all of this occurs the dystopian soundtrack is being played very quietly in the back behind the VO of the people talking to give ambiance and characterise/enhance what the people are talking about. There is the mention of ‘dust’ and then new people are introduced on the documentary style interview individually talking about the dust, the shots would move from the professional and stable camera work of the interviews to shaky shots of people from the past dealing with the dust with continuous VO’s of the people's everyday life such as a man brushing a immense amount of dust off of his front porch and another man picking up his plates which have been turned over so they wouldn't get dust on them. The shots and description of the dust gave a very real sense as it was people doing everyday tasks such as setting the table but having to adapt to it suggesting this had been gradually and a long term problem. The only thing keep this from being seen as an apocalyptic setup/film would be that there are people in the future giving reassurance that the human race do in fact survive and giving such a huge suspenseful plot point away is risky but it creates a sense that by the end we will not care if all humans survive but the characters that we are introduced to and personally connect with survive. Another plot point that we gain from these interviews front he variety of people being interviewed is that is was a long time ago as there is no variation of age group as they are all older and also that this event did not just hit a small area but was possible international or hit all of america as there is a multiple number of them and they all have different accents talking about the same issue. The danger of the dust is enhanced largely by the description of the measures that people had to take to protect themselves by one lady which is then followed by a man talking about his experience but he clearly has a damaged eye that is bandaged over and as the previous dialogue was talking about the danger of the dust, we as an audience connect the dots and come to the conclusion that the dust is what hurt him. A common theme that i have touched on previously would be the bookshelf that is often in the back or presenting itself in shot and what is also revealed in these interviews is that in each one the background is very low lighting(essentially darkness) with the light lighting on a bookshelf in the back hinting at the importance of the specific bookshelf we saw in the beginning or of bookshelves in general but we definitely know that this is a key plot point as it is manifested in almost all of the first two minutes.

Final Opening Sequence

This final sequence is a result of all of the previous research, planning and practices I have logged onto blogger below.
