Camera Operator - Marcell Rév

 Marcell Rév

Marcell Rév is a widely respected camera operator for having been the cinematographer behind movies like Malcolm and Marie, White & Gold, Assassin's nation and tv show Euphoria. What Marvell has achieved through his individual camera work is a style that embodies the vibe around the movie; he has been said to ‘make the characters breathe’. How he does this varies on each piece he is put on but the base foundations never change this being, the high use of colour combinations and ‘emotional realism’ - a way of showing the character's overall emotions is a very exaggerated visual way. The use of colour is done through their colour temperatures, contrasting lighting with a colour palette and this is used to increase the emotional response and extremes so that the vibe is communicated in every possible way. This style tied into his belief of emotional realism as with these dramatic styles of lighting and colour are still kept naturalistic and very relatable with the wonderland atmosphere around it. A very good example and very known part of his work was Euphoria which is highly expressive and all his styles are extremely noticeable and was in fact instructed by the director to keep one lens the entire shoot, he shot the entire season one on an Alexa 65 to fit the youthful characters and their situations and fit with the modern point of view director Sam Levinson was trying to achieve, his favourite and most common form of film is the 35mm and will try to fit it in whenever he can.
